Dean Walter was born and raised in the small coastal town of Scituate, Massachusetts. He graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Visual Arts and a minor in Educational Studies from Roger Williams University. He was introduced to photography at a young age when his dad gave him his old Pentax K1000. He first started taking pictures of what he understood best which was surfing and the costal places he often visited. His early work was inspired by the offbeat and often unconventional artwork seen in surfing and skateboarding culture.
Dean’s love for the process of film photography soon brought him to begin experimenting with video. His video work is considered more experimental, and often focuses on light, sound, color, in an attempt to play with the viewers senses. He often creates out of camera effects by exploring the limits of different household items ranging from hair gel to tinfoil.
Dean is currently living in California , continuing to build on his photography and videos.
STATEMENT
The path that lead me to create the work I do today was influenced by my passion for surfing and skateboarding. Growing up I was immersed in a small but very serious surf and skate community in my hometown of Scituate, MA. The people I surrounded myself with and the weird art I saw in Transworld Surf, and Transworld Skateboarding Magazines helped shape my art today. The uncertainty and fluidity of the ocean is reflected in my work as well. My art uses light, sound, in and out of camera effects to play with the viewers senses. I make my videos by taking everyday objects and scenes and transforming them into abstract and otherworldly creations. I often find the unpredictable and constantly changing nature of the ocean reflected in myself and the people around me. By creating my art to put a meaning and form to the things about myself, as well as the people, and objects around me that I do not understand.
